📚 Course Overview

The Turner Trade at SVK GOVT. ITI College, Latur is one of the most sought-after technical courses under the Craftsmen Training Scheme (CTS, NSQF-Level 4). During the two-year duration, a candidate is trained on subjects- Professional Skill, Professional Knowledge, and Employability Skills related to job role. In addition to this, a candidate is entrusted to make/do project work and Extra Curricular Activities to build up confidence. The practical skills are imparted in simple to complex manner & simultaneously theory subject is taught in the same fashion to apply cognitive knowledge while executing task.

The TURNER trade mainly consists of Domain area and Core area. In the Domain area (Trade Theory & Practical) imparts professional skills and knowledge, while Core area (Employability Skills) imparts requisite core skill, knowledge and life skills. After passing out of the training programme, the trainee is awarded National Trade Certificate (NTC) by DGT which is recognized worldwide.

🎯 Objectives

The main goal of this trade is to prepare trainees to:

• Skill Development – Train in lathe machine operations, turning, facing, tapering, threading, boring, knurling, etc.
• Precision & Quality – Teach accurate measurement techniques using vernier calipers, micrometers, gauges, and other instruments.
• Safety Awareness – Promote safe working practices in machine operation and workshop environment.
• Technical Knowledge – Provide understanding of engineering drawings, cutting tools, materials, and speeds/feeds.
• Maintenance Skills – Equip with the ability to service and maintain lathe machines and related tools.
• Employment Readiness – Prepare students for roles in manufacturing, maintenance workshops, tool rooms, and machine shops.
• Entrepreneurship Support – Encourage self-employment in small-scale machining businesses.

🏗️ Course Structure

Table below depicts the distribution of training hours across various course elements during a period of two years:

Every year 150 hours of mandatory OJT (On the Job Training) at nearby industry wherever not available then group project is mandatory. Trainees of one-year or two-year trade can also opt for optional courses of up to 240 hours in each year for 10th/12th class certificate along with ITI certification, or, add on short term courses.

📂 Projects & Practical Activities

Students are encouraged to undertake:

• Minor and major job-skills.
• Drilling, reaming, and counterboring on lathe
• Fabricating a small hammer handle
• External threading with single-point tool etc.

🛠️ Apprenticeship & Industry Exposure

After completing the course, students can:

• Join Apprenticeship programs in industries like Mechanic, Automobile manufacturing units, Maintenance Technician-Service Workshop, Auto Service Technician-Mechanic, Fitter in Automobile services
• Gets on-job training through MoU tie-ups with local companies, MSMEs, and government organizations

🤝 Dual System of Training (DST)

Ministry of Skill Development & Entrepreneurship (MSDE) introduced the scheme “Dual System of Training” (DST) wef. August, 2016 session. DST helps enable Industry linkages and provide hands on experience to students on industries latest/ updated technologies.

Objective of DST scheme is to enable industries and establishments to partner with Government and Private ITIs for conducting training programmes under high employability courses so as to fulfil their skilled manpower requirements. The duration of DST may vary between 6 to 12 months.

• Can join Crafts Instructor Training Scheme (CITS) in the trade for becoming instructor in ITIs
• Can appear in 10+2 examination through National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS)
• Can take admission in diploma course in notified branches (such as Mechanical) of Engineering by lateral entry
• Can join Advanced Diploma (Vocational) courses under DGT as applicable
